The top eight teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs, which culminate in the Stanley Cup Finals, a best-of-seven series to determine the league champion.

The NHL was founded in 1917, and has undergone a number of changes over the years. The league expanded from its original six teams to its current 32 teams in the 1990s. The NHL also introduced a number of new rules in recent years, including the shootout, which is used to break ties in the regular season and playoffs.

  A Russian tourist was killed in a shark attack near a beach in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada on Thursday, June 8, 2023. The man, who was in his late 20s, was swimming near the Sahl Hasheesh resort when he was attacked by a shark. He was taken to a local hospital, but he died from his injuries. This is the third shark attack in Egypt in the past year. In July 2022, a 68-year-old Austrian woman was killed in a shark attack off the coast of Hurghada, and in October 2022, a Romanian tourist was injured in a shark attack off the coast of Sahl Hasheesh. Shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea, but they do happen. The Red Sea is home to a variety of sharks, including tiger sharks, bull sharks, and mako sharks. These sharks are not typically aggressive towards humans, but they can be if they feel threatened. The Egyptian government has closed off a 60-kilometer (37-mile) stretch of coastline near Hurghada in the wake of the attack. The closure is expected to last for at least a week.
