2023 Odisha train collision Incident

On June 2, 2023, three trains collided near the city of Balasore, in the state of Odisha in eastern India. Two passenger trains, the 12841 Coromandel Express and the 12864 SMVT Bengaluru–Howrah SF Express, collided with a freight train near the Bahanaga Bazar railway station.

The collision occurred at around 11:00 PM local time. The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but it is believed that the freight train may have been stopped on the tracks due to a mechanical failure.

The collision resulted in the deaths of at least 100 people and injuries to over 200 others. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, where they are being treated for their injuries.

The Indian government has announced a compensation package for the victims of the collision. The package includes ₹500,000 (US$6,500) for the families of the deceased, ₹250,000 (US$3,250) for the seriously injured, and ₹100,000 (US$1,300) for the minor injured.

The collision is the latest in a series of train accidents in India. In 2017, a train collision in Amritsar killed 60 people. In 2018, a train collision in Kanpur killed 150 people.

The Indian government has been criticized for its poor track record in terms of train safety. In 2019, the government announced a number of reforms aimed at improving train safety. However, it remains to be seen whether these reforms will be effective
